Soft, Fluffy & Perfect for Sandwiches!🥖

There is nothing — and I mean nothing — like a homemade hoagie roll. Soft on the inside, lightly chewy on the outside, and perfect for loading with meats, cheeses, or anything you’d normally tuck into your favorite sub sandwich.

If you’ve never made homemade bread before, don’t worry — this recipe is incredibly forgiving and easy. The dough comes together in minutes, rises beautifully, and bakes into the most perfect, golden rolls. They taste just like the ones from your favorite deli… but fresher, softer, and made right in your own kitchen.

These rolls are perfect for Philly cheesesteaks, meatball subs, Italian sandwiches, or even just slathered with butter. Once you make them once, you’ll make them forever.

Why You’ll Love These Hoagie Rolls

  • Only simple pantry ingredients

  • Beginner-friendly and fail-proof

  • Soft, fluffy interior with a beautiful golden crust

  • Perfect shape for sandwiches, subs, and cheesesteaks

  • Makes your whole house smell like a bakery

  • Freezer-friendly!

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups warm water

  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 tablespoon honey 🍯

  • 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed

  • 1 egg white

  • 1 tablespoon milk

How to Make Easy Hoagie Rolls

1. Activate the Yeast

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine:

  • Warm water

  • Instant yeast

  • Sugar

  • Honey

Stir and let sit for 10 minutes, until foamy on top.(This means your yeast is awake and ready!)

2. Add Flour & Mix

Add in the flour and mix on low speed for 5 minutes using the dough hook. The dough will start coming together, but it will still be soft — that’s perfect.

3. Add Salt & Butter

Add salt and the cubed butter. Mix until the butter melts into the dough and everything is fully combined.

4. First Rise

Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.

5. Shape the Rolls

Gently deflate the dough and divide it into roll-sized portions. Shape into long hoagie rolls (about 6–7 inches long).

Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

6. Second Rise

Cover again and let rise another 1–2 hours, until puffy and soft.

7. Egg Wash

Whisk together:

  • Egg white

  • Milk

Brush the tops of the rolls for a shiny, golden crust.

8. Bake

Bake at 375°F for 22 minutes, or until lightly golden.

Let cool slightly before slicing — though warm rolls are hard to resist!

Tips for Bakery-Style Hoagie Rolls

  • Use warm, not hot, water so the yeast activates properly

  • The long rise = soft rolls with great texture

  • Brush with egg white + milk for a glossy, golden finish

  • Weigh your dough pieces for perfectly even rolls

  • Freeze extras — they reheat beautifully

Perfect for Cheesesteaks, Subs & More

These hoagie rolls pair perfectly with your Crock Pot Philly Cheesesteak, but they’re also incredible with meatballs, deli meats, grilled chicken, or anything you want to pile into a soft, warm roll.

They’re simple enough for a weeknight and special enough for a homemade sandwich night with friends or family.

If you bake them, tag me — I’d love to see your soft, fluffy hoagie rolls! 🥖✨
